Xe Lanong 1, 2 & 3 Dams Hydropower Info - by Hobo Maps - Go to Hydropower Projects Page - - - Home
This web page covers all three XeLanong hydropower projects. Alternate spellings on the web are Selanong, Selenong, Selalong, Seranong and Xe La Nong.
Xe Lanong 1 (Selenong 1 / Se Lanong 1) Hydropower project is located between Phin and Nong districts in Savannakhet Province of southern Lao PDR.
Construction of the Xe Lanong 1 dam began in 2017. The project was completed in 2020 and is currently supplying electricity to Electrictie du Laos (EDL) for domestic consumption in Laos under a 25-year concession agreement.

Xe Lanong 1 has two 35 MW vertical-axis Francis turbine-generator sets for 70 MW total installed capacity with ability to produce 270 GWh output per year.
The US $150 million project is owned by four companies: China International Energy Development Corporation (YEIG) with a 70% stake, Dao Savanh (Laos) with 15%, Electricite du Laos 10% and China's Sunpaper Holding Lao with 5%.
Lao-based Daosavanh Company Ltd. was the XeLanong 1 project developer.
China-based Sinohydro Bureau 10 provided engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services for the XeLanong 1 project.
Power China Chengdu Engineering Corporation Limited was responsible for the design and supply of electromechanical equipment.
Yunnan Energy Investment Group provided financing.

The dam structure is a roller-compacted concrete gravity type with height of 67.5 meters.
The project area covers almost 2,500 hectares in the Dong Phu Vieng National Protected Area.
The reservoir can hold up to r.
We have reports of reservoir capacity as both 284 million and 953 million cubic meters of water. Not sure which is correct. Maybe 284 is drawdown capacity?
The reservoir surface at full supply level is about 206 meters above mean sea level.
Xe Lanong 1 project site is not far from where the Xe Lanong (river) joins the Xe Banghieng (river) in Savannakhet Province as seen in satellite image below:

XeLanong 2 HPP Info Below:
China Gezhouba Group Corp. is developing the Xelanong 2 hydroelectric plant in southern Salavan (Saravene) province, Lao PDR. The 35 MW project (142 GWh) is using a build-operate-transfer model with construction of the US $72 million facility expected to take about 40 months. Xelanong 2 and its 55-meter-high dam will be located on a tributary of the Mekong River.
XeLanong 2 Hydropower Project site is shown on the map below.
Our best estimate of the location for XeLanong 2 hydropower project based on the above map is near coordinates - 16°13'57.2"N 106°35'40.5"E (16.232565, 106.594592) as shown in satellite image below:

XeLanong 3 Dam Hydropower Info below - maybe also known as Tang-Eun HPP EP01:
Info about the XeLanong 3 hydropower project in a video HERE .
It seems this project has been developing for some time as we found this 2017 news report on the web - Source: Lao News Agency February 20, 2017 - "Kha Young Kham Company has begun constructing the Xe La Nong 3 Hydropower Project, a 12.5 -megawatt hydropower plant valued at about US $31 million, in Ta-oy district, Saravan Province. The construction is expected to take three years to complete.
The company completed a power purchase negotiation with Electricity du Laos in August 2016 and is currently preparing to relocate families that will be affected by the construction of the Xe La Nong 3 Hydropower Project."
But it seems there have been big changes made to the project plans since the video has it as a 60 MW facility (see screenshot image below) while the 2017 report above has it as a 12.5 MW project and an even earlier report has it as an 80 MW project.
A recent MEM report has the project as 60 MW & 243 GWh.

XeLanong 3 dam location images below. These images have a perspective view similar to what we would see when looking down from a high-flying airplane at a distance and the distances are greatly distorted so we can't be sure of the precise location of Xe La Nong 3 Hydropower Project site. North is not in upward direction in the image below. The project site seems to be not far from the XeLanong 2 HPP site where we do have better location data so we have both projects together on our Laos Hydropower Map for now.

Location of Xe Lanong 1, 2 & 3 hydropower projects are shown together at the top of map below:
Note: The Lao words "Xe" and "Nam" both mean "river" and a term such as "Nam XeLanong" is not normally used.
